Biography

A Tanzanian-born singer, Salum Matata is influenced by Fela Kuti, Keziah Jones, Ali Farka Toure and blues icons like John Lee Hooker and BB King.

He gained popularity in Zanzibar with his original songs “Salaam Alaikum” (2017) and “Nisaidie” (2017). His inaugural EP “Nafsi” (Soul) will be released in 2024 with  seven original tracks.

As a child, while listening to his Grandmother’s singing in her Fipa language Salum developed his love and talent for music.  Salum has taken those melodies and added his own Swahili lyrics and style to compose dozens of original songs around themes of life and social challenges. This foundation creates a distinct musical identity for Salum and serves as cultural preservation, keeping the essence of ancestral melodies and spiritual wisdom alive in his music. Starting in Zanzibar, he captivated audiences with his innovative blend. Over the last few years he has toured Kenya, South Africa, Germany, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania gaining recognition beyond Tanzania.
